FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifiers: India's Campaign Concludes with a 2-1 Loss to Qatar

Lallianzuala Chhangte scored India’s only goal in the first half. The Indian football team finished third in Group A, managing only one win from six matches.

The Indian men's football team was eliminated from the second round of the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers after a 2-1 defeat to reigning Asian champions Qatar in their final Group A match at the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium in Doha, Qatar, on Tuesday.

India finished third in Group A with just one win in six games and failed to advance to the third round of the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers. Kuwait, following their 1-0 victory against Afghanistan on the final matchday, joined table-toppers Qatar in progressing to the next round of the qualifiers.

World No. 34 Qatar rallied from a goal down after Lallianzuala Chhangte (37’) scored the opening goal for India, ranked 121st in the world. The hosts responded in the second half with goals from Yousef Aymen (73’) and Ahmed Al-Rawi (85’).

Goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, wearing the captain’s armband, was called into action early on, making a strong save within the first two minutes. The Qatar football team continued to make inroads, keeping Gurpreet busy during the first 15 minutes.

India had a great chance just after the half-hour mark when Manvir Singh found himself in a one-on-one situation with the opposition keeper but failed to finish. The ball then fell to Lallianzuala Chhangte, who also couldn't convert the opportunity.
The visitors finally made the most of their dominance and got on the scoresheet. Brandon Fernandes sent a low cross from the flank, and Chhangte's touch beat Qatari goalkeeper Shehab Ellethy, sliding into the net.
The Qatar national football team pressed for an equalizer vigorously in the second half, leading to a crucial intervention by Mehtab Singh just nine minutes after the restart.

In the 73rd minute, the hosts leveled the score when Yousef Aymen netted the equalizer.

Igor Stimac's squad had an opportunity to reclaim the lead ten minutes later, with Jay Gupta and Liston Colaco coming close. However, the hosts effectively sealed the match with another goal shortly after.

After a series of missed opportunities, Ahmed Al-Rawi found the net for the reigning Asian champions in the 83rd minute. Despite India's spirited effort in the closing minutes, they were unable to find the equalizer.
